Summer is a wonderful time for outdoor fun, vacations, and family adventures. For children with Autism, changes in routine and new environments can present unique challenges. A little planning can help make the season both safe and enjoyable.
Children with Autism often do best with predictable schedules. Use a visual calendar or simple daily schedule, and prepare your child in advance for changes in routine.
Offer water regularly, dress your child in lightweight clothing, and take breaks in the shade or air conditioning to prevent overheating.
Many children are naturally drawn to water. Always provide close supervision around pools, lakes, and beaches, and consider swim lessons and life jackets when appropriate.
Busy summer destinations can increase the risk of wandering. Use identification bracelets, dress your child in bright clothing, and establish a meeting place if you become separated.
Pack items that help your child stay comfortable, such as noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, fidget toys, favorite comfort items, snacks, and water.
Apply sunscreen, encourage hats and protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.
Every child has different needs, but with preparation and a focus on safety, families can enjoy a fun, relaxing, and memorable summer together.
